Mercedes-Benz Power Antenna Repair and Our Antenna Exchange Program

A fair number of the calls we get about a Mercedes-Benz radio turn out to have nothing to do with the radio at all. The mast is stuck halfway up, or it won't come down when the car shuts off, or reception has gone staticky even though the head unit itself still powers on and plays fine. Almost every time, the actual part at fault is the power antenna, and on classic and older Mercedes-Benz models that almost always means a Hirschmann unit.

What a Power Antenna Actually Does

Mercedes-Benz used Hirschmann power antennas across chassis generations going back to 1965, and they're still the correct replacement part on many of the older cars we see today. Unlike a fixed mast, a power antenna has a small motor and gear assembly inside the base that extends the mast when the radio turns on and retracts it when the car shuts off. That motor and the cable that drives the mast up and down are mechanical parts, and after enough years of use they wear the same way any other motor in a car eventually does.

The Two Failure Modes We See Most

Almost every power antenna problem that comes through the shop falls into one of two categories. The first is mechanical: the mast gets stuck up, won't extend at all, or makes a grinding noise as it tries to move, which usually points to the motor or the internal cable that raises and lowers it. The second is electrical: the mast still moves normally, but reception has gotten weak or staticky, which usually traces back to a corroded connection at the antenna base or a cable core that's worn through after years of vibration.

• Weak, staticky, or dropping reception with the mast moving normally
• No reception at all despite the head unit powering on and playing fine

Why We Rebuild Instead of Guessing at a Replacement

New-old-stock Hirschmann antennas for the older Mercedes-Benz chassis generations aren't something you can just order off a shelf anymore, and a lot of what shows up for sale online is itself a worn or partially failed unit. Rather than sending a customer chasing a replacement of unknown condition, we rebuild the antenna itself, which lets us fix the actual worn part, motor, cable, or base connection, rather than swapping in another antenna that may fail the same way within a year or two.

How the Antenna Exchange Program Works

When you send in your defective original antenna, you get a $50 credit toward a rebuilt Hirschmann unit rather than paying full price for a rebuild from scratch. It works the same way a core charge does on a lot of mechanical auto parts: your original housing and hardware go back into the rebuild pipeline, so the antenna that comes back to you is a genuine rebuilt Hirschmann unit, not a generic aftermarket substitute, and you're not paying the full cost of sourcing and rebuilding a unit from nothing.
